P10 Tips and Helpful Hints

Here is a helpful hint I received from a colleague:

If you are having difficulty with the Windows Control (Mouse Control), go into:

  • Settings Menu
  • Advanced Settings
  • Choose "Mouse" on the left hand side
  • Try changing the "Fixation Sensitivity"

You can also try changing the length of the dwell time (be aware that this dwell time will change only for the mouse..not for when you are using the dot/clock).

Andreis mom:

Interesting tip, thank you Erin! We'll try that!

alin0s:

transport of a P10 can be difficult... check into Pelican cases... they come with uncut foam inserts... are water proof and totally air tight.... cut the foam for a custom fit!

chris147:

- the fixation sensitivity settings do work, I have been using them for a long while

- probably a water proof, air tight case is better than anything else but I say the standard tobii bag is just fine. the P10 can`t really be used outdoors anyway if the lighting conditions are that bad.

- transporting the tobii on a mount on a wheelchair is a great way plus the user can access the tobii while travelling

- I would suggest everyone to buy a USB hub for a couple of reasons at least: with a hub there will several more slots become available; having the hub mounted at the back of the unit is a safe way to plug in long USB devices such as WLAN sticks, etc.

Erin Beneteau:

These are great guys!

Any specific tips on mounting to a wheelchair?

Please keep adding ideas throughout the summer as you come up with them!

Thanks so much!
Erin

alin0s:

Daessy mounts are probably the best and in my mind only thing to go with...

If subject to slight bumps and scrapes (hint product idea tobii corp product idea) a giant rubber case like a giant cell phone maybe ;)

chris147:

my P10 is mounted to my chair`s frame with Daessy mount and it works just fine. I beleive a mytobii should be mounted to the users` wheelchairs as this is the place where they are the most comfortable plus it should be a mobile device therefore, it makes sense to mount the P10 to the chairs.

Andreis mom:

Hi Erin,

I followed your tip and it seems to work a little bit better, but I am still not sure whether these are the best settings for Andrei:
Fixation Sensitivity: low (to the left). Before was in the middle.
Dwell time: 100ms
I would like to hear how other users have set and how it is going.
Thank you!
Mihaela - mother

P.S. I have to mention the last time Andrei's mouse control is improving a lot! It's wonderful to see that! :-)

chris147:

Setting the fixation sensitivity to the lowest possible can help especially if the user struggles to keep gazing at one point. We can look at this feature as a fine tune equipment for the eye gaze controlled mouse cursor.

To Andrei, I would try to set the Dwell time longer. 100ms seems to be very quick. Mine is 843ms. With this setting, which I found the best for me, I think I can separate intentional eye gaze from just staring into space, looking, observing somehting on the monitor. Plus it gives me a bigger margin for errors, like when my eyes jump to the far left, the mouse control menu doesn`t pop up so quickly.

Although, mouse control is wonderful in tobii v2.4.x I still prefer tobii enabled applications - even contacted a few companies to make their products tobii enabled - and/or control throught the Grid with cells.

Andreis mom:

Thank you Chris for your tips, very appreciated. I'll increase the dwell time and see what will happen...

chris147:

good luck, looking forward to your feedback

Andreis mom:

Chris, your arguments to try a longer Dwell time are very logical... but unfortunately that doesn't really work for Andrei. His eye fixation is pretty quick and exact. He tends to loose concentration if it takes too long to click the mouse. I noticed that mousecontrol is almost impossible for Andrei when the Dwell time is longer than 200 ms.

chris147:

In this case I`d keep on trying until the right dwell time is found. According to what you said your son needs a shorter dwell activation time. I would also play around with the fixation sensitivity in order to find the best possible match for him. I can`t be sure but I guess a short dwell time with a low fixation sensitivity set up could work quite well for him. Plus you could always give the dwell feedback settings, too. I found that no feedback is the best for me hence there is no dwell clock or shrinking dot in front of my eyes to disturb my vision and concentration. I am not saying this would work well with Andrei, but you never know. One more thing, make sure that the dwell times are correctly set up for each applications in the tobii`s advanced settings panel; also different work enviroments might require different settings. Oh, and mouse control (for me at least) is the hardest thing on the tobii. Even with the settings which suit me best.

Andreis mom:

Thank you Chris for reminding me to hide the feedback. I was earlier thinking to try that (after I saw in MyTobiiblog - Tip of the month: Hiding the feedback, from Bartek Tatkowski — Dec 4, 2007)... Andrei was not ready to try that til a few days ago when finally I managed to convince him :-)... Now he enjoys windows mousecontrol more... though also for Andrei mousecontrol is still the hardest thing on the tobii.

Erin Beneteau:

Hi Chris,

What exactly are you meaning by "hide the feedback?" Making the interaction dot invisible?

Thanks,
Erin

chris147:

yes, that`s it.
