My name is Joerg Dahlke. I am 35 years old. By profession I am (well, I was) web designers and network engineers. On 28 March 2006, I got the diagnosis of ALS. We only knew nothing to start, but with time, we realized that I'd really caught the bottom. I could expect it to be nothing but terminal. I immediately began to search the Internet, to find answerst to how the progress of disease could be stopped. But I realized that my independence would gradually go down the stream.
However, on the Internet I came across some forums that helped me to confront my illness. There were some AAC tools that I simply couldn't accept, but then I discovered a number of eye control systems. I chose the MyTobii. This system includes every aspect of communication and offers a "new self". This also convinced the insurance company for funding approval in a short time.
On the day of delivery, I immediately began with the personal settings and programming needed. Through my profession, I had no trouble programming. Also MyTobii recognized my eyes immediately and tracks accurately. Through this high precision, it is possible for me to program my website http://the-true-live.de/, by editing programs as Photoshop and Dreamweaver. Through the integrated USB port, it is possible for me to control different equipment. Through IR I can now use the landline phone, the TV, stereo and DVD player without the assistance of anyone else. Through a Bluetooth USB sending and receiving SMS is no problem. The integrated speech allows me to talk to and chat with my friends.
The simple control of all programs allows me to be independent and makes my everyday life a lot easier. The attached battery pack allows me to use MyTobii for about 7 hours - even on the road.
Now spring has finally arrived and I was sitting outside on the terrace with the MyTobii the other day. The terrace is facing south and it's sunny all day. Coming to the point, the MyTobii tracks my eye movements perfectly in direct sunlight, even through black tinted sunglasses. And I don't even have glasses indicated in the settings. The only weakness is that it gets a bit difficult to see what's on the display in direct sunlight.
I would like to give my compliments to the Tobii developers! The customizing and personilazation of the user is simply awesome. I would very much like to share my experience with everyone who are dependent on communication aids such as MyTobii. In November a team from the German TV station RTL television Punkt12, visited and made a news flash about me, my illness and MyTobii. Again, I would like to thank all parties involved in the development of MyTobii for helping me and others who suffer from a deceise like ALS to a nearly independent life.
